Air balancing is a method that answers your comfort and efficiency concerns about the heating and cooling system. Air balancing is a process that involves air testing and adjusting of the air conditioning systems so it can have the sufficient amount of air into each room. It involves related tests that will help the air balancing experts determine the performance of the cooling and heating system.

Why do we have to make sure that the air is balanced in the first place? Air balancing is basically done because when the air is balanced, the ducted rooms will receive enough volume of air. In that way the desired temperature is maintained so you get the comfort of getting what is enough. The lack of air balancing implies that there is too much back pressure on some parts of the ducting in the heating and cooling systems. This can reduce the efficiency of the system thus increasing the number of breakdowns and reducing the life of the unit. There are three major steps in achieving the proper operation the ventilation systems.

Testing – this step uses specialized and calibrated instruments to accurately measure the temperature, pressure, the rotational speed, electrical characteristics, velocity, and quantity of water to evaluate the ventilation equipment and the overall performance of the system.

Adjusting – it is where the balancing devices that include the dampers and valves, adjusting fan speeds, pump impeller, and automatic control devices such as the thermostat and the pressure controllers are set to achieve specified system performance and efficiency.

Balancing – this is the methodical regulation of the flow of the system fluid using standard procedures to meet the desired air or water flow.

The kitchen should also undergo kitchen exhaust system balancing to avoid extreme discomfort and having high utility bills. Uneven cooking surface temperatures due to the accumulation of excessive grease and other pollutants are factors in having poor quality of food.

Aside from duct insulation, there are still other indoor air quality solutions and tests that we should do to achieve the optimum level of quality. One is through comfort balancing. This is a way of simply checking to see whether the room is condition well. You can easily do comfort balancing by just holding your hands up to see if the air that is coming out of the registers is sufficient and by asking if the resident feel comfortable with the condition of the air. If not, then you have to proceed with the procedures that get the problem fixed.

You also have to do regular duct leakage test. This is a method of testing the rate of the leakage on a specified area in the duct system. This method is usually required on all the large duct systems.  Building pressure testing should also be done. This test can specifically determine what outside infiltrates a building during its operation. Building pressure testing can minimize the cost of conditioning the outside air
